Located in the middle of Little Italy, The Police Building, an ornate Baroque-revival-style palace, is one of New York City's extravagant surprises. Originally built as headquarters of the NYC Police Department, this spectacular structure with its grand exterior was designed by Hoppin & Koen (1909). At that time, architects and planners were still inspired by the 'White City' – a Beaux Arts idea of a splendid city that had been showcased at the World's Colombian Exposition in Chicago (1893).
As well, the city's dream for an impressive, new city government complex in the area of City Hall was an extra impetus. Planners always dream that major projects can revive a neighborhood. Yet it was not until decades after the construction of The Police Building that Little Italy began to reach its full potential.
In 1973, the city opened a new police headquarters. The Police Building was now far removed from its glory days. A few years later, S.I.T.E. (Sculpture In The Environment), a renowned New York design group, teamed with a group of architects and Canadian developers to redevelop the building as a deluxe hotel. The developers included John J. Ferchill, Arthur D. Emil, and Edward R. Downe Jr., leader of Downe Communications. Downe claimed one of the most opulent units to store his huge collection of 20th Century American Art.
Designed by Ehrenkrantz Group & Eckstut, the 55-apartment renovation was one of the country's best conversions of historical landmarks. The building's dome bears resemblance to the beautiful cupola of the Hotel des Invalides in Paris. Its wedge-shape at the northern end and the fenced park are reminiscent of Venice's marvelous buildings.
The building has an entrance at the midblock of its Centre Street frontage leading up a few steps to an expansive and elaborate lobby. The residence has spacious and varied apartments with high ceilings. One unit has an outstanding garden. Another apartment features an attractive terrace overlooking the lovely, green space.
With the superb quality and glorious style of its exterior and interiors, The Police Building is regarded as the "premier residence in Lower Manhattan." The building is close to Café Roma, known as the best Italian café in the city, and Café Ferrara, a larger and well-known establishment. Although lacking a health club and pool, this deluxe hotel has an unrivalled glamour not seen in modern developments. With first-class fireplaces and fabulous grandeur, the Police Building harks back to the Gilded Age of Millionaire's Row on Fifth Avenue.
Marble lobby with terrazzo and terra cotta ceiling. Gold leaf detailing. Garden; Fitness Room; Laundry Room; Private Storage.
