Designated an official New York City landmark in 1988, the Gainsborough at 222 Central Park South features some of the best views of all the studio buildings in the city. Originally designed as combined living and work space for artists, the Gainsborough has 34 units with double-height living rooms and dazzling views of Central Park. Some consider this pre-war building an architectural masterpiece due to its European influence and ornate details. Its façade features double-story windows and an entry frieze that distinguish the building from surrounding post-war and Art Deco properties.
All of the front apartments of the Gainsborough are duplexes with high ceilings and oversized windows. Each unit has artist-inspired features such as leaded-glass cabinets and mahogany woodwork. Select units also have tiled fireplaces for additional comfort. Most apartments are 750 to 1,400 square feet, but some units are as large as 2,000 square feet. Although the Gainsborough has no gardens or fountains, it is just a short walk to Central Park and all it has to offer. The neighborhood has a pleasing ambience and offers convenient access to shopping, supermarkets and public transportation. Designed in the International style, the exterior of the Gainsborough features a well-known sculpture of Thomas Gainsborough above the entrance. The doorways have decorative pediments at their tops and lattice-like masonry at their bases.
The bustling Central Park South neighborhood has plenty of shops and restaurants to satisfy the tastes and palates of even the most discriminating New Yorker. With Central Park just blocks away, opportunities for walking, cycling, boating and other outdoor activities are plentiful. Gainsborough residents also enjoy close proximity to Columbus Circle and Carnegie Hall.
